Introduction:
In this article I will be discussing how to install Tom Cat Apache server on Windows Environment where IIS is already installed and run your first Hello World JSP page. This article is tested on Windows XP machine with IIS 5.1 Already Intalled.

Main Content:
You need to have JDK 1.6 installed on your system in order for Tomcat 6.0 to work properly.
you can get it from java.sun.com

Below are the steps to install Tom Cat Apache server:

a)Download the windows version of Tom Cat Apache server from the URL below:
http://tomcat.apache.org/download-60.cgi
On the above URL select 6.0.29--Binary Distributions--Core--32 Bit Windows Zip

b)Unzip the downloaded zip file and move folder "apache-tomcat-6.0.29" with all its content to C: drive.

c)To run your apache server go to

Start -- Run -- C:\apache-tomcat-6.0.29\bin\startup.bat

d)To stop your apache server go to
Start -- Run -- C:\apache-tomcat-6.0.29\bin\shutdown.bat

e)Now start preparing to run your first JSP page :
type http://localhost:8080/ in the browser if nothing opens.
type http://localhost/ this will open IIS pages.
This means port 8080 is already captured by IIS so we need to set a different port for Apache Server.

Go to C:\apache-tomcat-6.0.29\conf\server.xml and change 8080 to 1979(or any port greater than 1024)

Save the file server.xml and restart the computer.

f)Now again restart the apache by
Start -- Run -- C:\apache-tomcat-6.0.29\bin\startup.bat

then browse http://localhost:1979/

Apache pages should come.

g)Now for first jsp page:

Browse to C:\apache-tomcat-6.0.29\webapps
Create a folder say MyJsp

Inside that MyJsp folder create a .txt File and rename it to index.jsp

open the index.jsp file in notepad and put the following text into that

Hello World!

Save the file .

h)Now browse the below URL to see your first JSP file.

http://localhost:1979/myJsp/index.jsp

In Case you are having any issue or for your further convenience you can create two environment variables, CATALINA_HOME and JAVA_HOME
as described below:

CATALINA_HOME : C:\apache-tomcat-6.0.19 (Exactly not this,Depends on your installed version)
JAVA_HOME : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_03 (Exactly not this,Depends on your installed version)

To create a environment variables in Windows XP, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables ->

System variables -> New. Enter the name and value for both the variables if it is not there.

Conclusion:
Thus we can run a JSP page which is first step towards creating a web application in java technology.
